RecoRail: Sustainable innovation in vehicle containment systems

At Road Steel, we are a company committed to sustainability and innovation. Our new product line, RecoRail, is a perfect example of how road safety and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. RecoRail is a vehicle containment system (VCS) made from two sustainable materials: recycled polymer and hot-rolled recycled steel (HRC) with low emissions.

Sustainable Materials

• Recycled polymer from rejected plastics, materials that would normally be destined for incineration or burial due to their difficult recyclability. This approach not only reduces the amount of plastic waste but also gives them a new useful life in the construction of safety barriers.
• Hot-rolled recycled steel. The metal parts of RecoRail are made from hot-rolled recycled steel, produced with renewable energies (low-emission steel). In the future, we plan to use “green” steel, which will be even more environmentally friendly. This recycled steel not only offers excellent strength and durability but also significantly contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

The 3 R’s of Sustainability (R3)

Our approach to sustainability is based on the 3 R’s: Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse.

• Reduce emissions. By using recycled materials and renewable energies, we significantly reduce the CO2 emissions associated with the production of our VCS.
• Recycle waste. We transform plastic and metal waste into useful components for our safety barriers, preventing this waste from continuing to accumulate in landfills or incinerators.
• Reuse material. We seek new designs with resilient materials that can be used repeatedly without compromising their performance.

The Need for Sustainable VCS

The installation of more sustainable vehicle containment systems is no longer just an option but will soon become a requirement to a greater or lesser extent. Although sustainable VCS are generally more expensive than conventional ones with equal performance, their implementation on roads will be conditioned by the establishment of a regulatory framework that specifies or incentivizes their use.
